There is a diversity of clay used in contemporary ceramic art, each with a unique feature. The effects, such as color and texture on the surface of the finished ceramics, vary according to the difference in clay applied and firing temperature ranges after glazing. In his lecture, Mr. Alan Lai will introduce different types of clay and glaze in contemporary ceramic art, hoping to expand the appreciation of the “Childhood in Ceramic” exhibition artworks with basic knowledge from a technical level.
About the Speaker
Founder of arthome.hk studio, Alan Lai Chi Kong is an art educator, ceramicist and sculptor. He used to be a Visual Arts teacher in secondary schools and a lecturer in studio pottery and art education in universities in Hong Kong. He graduated from Sir Robert Black College of Education in 1978 and received the Merit Prize in the Advanced Teacher Education in Art in Grantham College of Education in 1985. He received the Distinction Award in the Studio Pottery in Hong Kong Polytechnic Advance Certificate in 1987. Mr. Lai received the Sir Robert Black scholarship to study the BEd in Art in the University of Liverpool and graduated with first class honours in 1991. He also completed the master’s degree in Chest University in 1995 and the ITE master’s degree with distinction in the University of Hong Kong in 2003. He founded the arthome.hk studio in Fotan to begin his pottery and wood carving creations in 2008, providing a series of pottery classes.
Mr. Lai began to create art and design since young, trying to explore every expressive possibility through various mediums to apply in his own creations, as well as his art education career. After retiring from full-time art teaching, he devoted fully to his art career. His works were selected several times in the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial. His works are exhibited worldwide in China, Japan and the United Kingdom, and collected by private collectors. Other than creating with different mediums, Mr. Lai’s research and works focus on exploring clay shaping and glazing.
