Huang Kuen-Po

Born in Taoyuan, Taiwan in 1974, Huang Kuen-Po graduated from the Fine Arts Department of National Taiwan Academy of Arts in 1998 and obtained a master’s degree from the Fine Arts Institute of the National Taiwan University of Arts in 2006. In 2012, Huang graduated from the Department of Fine Arts of Taiwan Normal University with a Ph.D. in Arts. He is currently a full-time professor of the Department of Fine Arts of National Taitung University and an adjunct professor of the Department of Fine Arts in National Taiwan Normal University.

Focusing on Western art, Huang mainly creates oil paintings and printmaking, particularly still lifes and portraits. His artworks are meticulous and lifelike in classical realism. While depicting the external image of an object, they strengthen the presence of aesthetic purity and embody Huang’s feelings and thoughts within. Through the presentation of realism, Huang returns to the fundamental pursuit of human nature and emotional exploration. He thinks that art can be simply about visual pleasure and sensation. His wish is to make viewers experience exactly what he has felt and noticed through light, shadow, brightness, darkness and the composition.

He said, “Classical realistic paintings focus on creating the ideal base color tone through layering. This technique is irreplaceable and difficult to create by any other medium”. The characteristic of oil paint is that it can be repeatedly changed and added in order to create different textures. The process of creating an oil painting is complicated and long as it requires hard work. Yet it is also the most interesting and enjoyable part for Huang. By recording reality through realism art, he finds the joy of artistic creation. His works are presented in numerous museums in Taiwan and collected by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and Chimei Museum.
